BC Wine Reviews

A fresh look at the Wines of BC with Sommelier and Chef Jay Drysdale.
Stoneboat Vineyards

Stoneboat Vineyards was born in 2005 but the grapes have been around for over 20 years.  I think Lanny and Julie Martiniuk were very smart to wait until their three sons could provide some serious muscle to the business and help venture mainstream into the BC wine industry.  I have watched these wines since their inception and its exciting to see them gently hone their craft with each vintage producing something better than the last.

2007 Pinot Gris

$18

Nectarine and floral notes layered with grass and mineral are a great way to start any pinot gris.  The palate starts off light and builds to a nice salty lemon\lime finish with lots of apple.  This wine is bright and fun and a great way to wrap up the summer.  I am reaching for a fresh scallop and avocado ceviche to help fill out the body of this wine.   Only a few cases left.  Tasted Aug 31, 2009

2008 Pinot Gris

$18

More tropical notes than the 2007 and touches of citrus, parsley, and a saltiness again.  The flavour on the palate starts and finishes strong with layers of apple, citrus, and pineapple to a nutty and grapefruit finish.  There is a little more weight to this wine and I am guessing it would get a little oily if it warmed up.  I am thinking tuna carpaccio with fried capers and pickled red onion would play nicely.  350 cases and to be released in September\October. Tasted Aug 31, 2009

2008 Pinot Gris- Barrel Reserve

$19

A solid core of apple and citrus with a dash of vanilla grip your senses to begin with.  The fat and silky palate sure impressed me, in fact, I wish more BC Pinot Gris had this viscosity and texture to them.  The oiliness is balanced with enough acidity to lift the fruit and keep it food friendly.  A wonderful long finish full of ripe apple rounds off this wine.  100 cases made and to be released in September\October. Tasted Aug 31, 2009

2008 Chorus

$18

A blend of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Viognier, Muller Thurgau, Kerner, and Schunburger, this wine is just plain fun to drink.  Tropical notes with scents of grass this wine carries a little bit of sugar that most consumers will find very friendly.  The wines approachability make it great on its own or with foods that aren't too spicy or acidic.  488 cases made.  Tasted Aug 31, 2009

2007 Pinot Noir

$24

Dark cherry and liquorice share the nose with forest floor, mushroom, and strawberries and toast.  This wine has a pace of its own, when you think is not showing well, it shows a little more and causes you to slow down and appreciate.  The palate shows some cherry cola and a long earthy finish with touches of hard candy. Well balanced and young 600 cases made.  Tasted Aug 31, 2009

2007 Pinotage

$25

Very impressed with the depth of color and how it stains the glass. Big ripe red berry fruits on the nose. Hints of cedar and a little caramel add to the complexity.  Nice tight tannin are consistent on the palate as the finish has a light smokiness to it.  A young wine that will gain some bottle complexity over the next 2-4 years.  I would decant for a couple hours prior and serve with grilled lamb chops. 700 cases made.  Tasted Aug 31, 2009

2007 Pinotage Reserve

$32

Aged for 18 months in 80% new french and american oak, this Pinotage takes on the impression of merlot muscle that we see so often in BC.  Huge blue fruits with cedar tones.  The palate has some serious grip and dust to it.  Keep in mind this is a barrel sample and still has some time to go before it hits the bottle.  I like the pieces, it just needs time to come together.  100 cases made. To be released in 2010.  With some polish this could be a 90+ wine.  Tasted Aug 31, 2009
