BC Wine Reviews

A fresh look at the Wines of BC with Sommelier and Chef Jay Drysdale.
Quinta Ferreira

2008 Sauvignon Blanc

$20

Classic aromas of grass, citrus, and gooseberry. The palate has a soft entry with consistent flavours and a flabby midpalate.  This wine is very easy to drink and finishes with a lemon oil.  Nicely made, I just want a little more zip to it.  I would try this wine with a lemon and green olive spagatinni done in a good quality Olive Oil.  250 cases made.   Tasted Aug 31, 2009

2008 Pinot Gris

$20

Very Italian in style as it leads with citrus, straw, and almond.  There is a clean grassiness to it as the wines flavours are simple yet precise.  Probably one of the easiest drinking pinot gris’s I have had this year.  Enjoy the last few dog days of summer with this wine on the patio.  150 cases made. 2008 Viognier

$20

Peach, pineapple, and perfume wake up the senses.  A huge apple mid-palate with a peach and rose water finish impressed me.  There is some residual sugar, but it works in this case and allows this wine to stand up to bigger foods like a charcouterie platter and pungent cheeses. 275 cases made. 2008 Mistura Branca

$20

Big Muscat flavours, dripping in floral and perfume aromas.  The wine is built well with enough acid to tame the sugar and make this wine easy to drink.  Gets a little soapy on the finish, but nothing some butter chicken wouldn’t fix.  550 cases made. Tasted Aug 31, 2009

2008 Chardonnay - Unoaked

$20

Ripe tropical fruit and apple flavours play into an over the top impression this wine holds on the nose and palate.  The residual combined with the ripe fruit flavours increase the perception of sweetness on this wine.  The palate is bright well balanced and simply needs some food to tame the monster that this Chardonnay is.  I am reaching for a steak with blue cheese butter.  I think this wine get softer and earthier with such a pairing.

2008 Rose

$20

Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Cab Sauv, Cab Franc make up this rose.  Salmon in colour with a huge complex nose that range from red berry fruits, to leather, to blueberries and plum.  A touch of earth helps ground this wine and the bright acidity and touch of sweetness round out the complex palate. Very impressive. How about roasted quail with a black olive tagliatelle.  475 cases made. Tasted Aug 31, 09.

2006 Merlot

$30

Huge dark berry fruits with loads of blueberry and cassis.  Hints of licorice and leather are starting to develop and the tannins are integrating very well.  Very balanced on the palate and delivers from front to back with an abundant of consistent flavours.  This wine is also over the top, but done so in a way that wow’s the senses.  This wine will make my top 10 list for 2009 and only get better for the next five years.  Great job. 555 cases made.   Tasted Aug 31, 2009

2006 Obra Prima

$35

Dark berry fruits with a touch of menthol and spice.  I like the youngness of this wine as you can tell it was built to last a little while.  I look forward to those fresh berry flavours to integrate more with the oak and get earthy and subtle.  This wine is well made and balanced.  433 cases made.   Tasted Aug 31, 2009

2007 Syrah

$25

Fun purple hue to the color of this wine. Bright red fruits like raspberry and strawberry mingle with cured meats and caramel and even a touch of earth on the nose.  The palate is balanced and vibrant and shows off the young acidity.  I like the minty finish.  Look forward to trying this wine again in a couple years.
